Asos top & skirt, Preston & Olivia hat (c/o), Foley & Corinna backpack (c/o), Vintage boots, Vera Meat rings & Vanessa Mooney hand chain (c/o)

I get asked pretty often about who takes my photos. Indeed, it's pretty much just been myself and a borrowed tripod for all these years. Usually I'll just wear whatever and then take photos before or after I've worn everything out and about. Now ya know.

I've been madly in love with this Preston & Olivia fedora for a few weeks now. I've been taking special care to prevent the brim from drooping because I love the sort of black halo it creates when I wear it on the crown of my head. To keep the wind from blowing it straight off my head, I'll find myself keeping it more forward when I'm walking, which, when worn with a long coat, makes me look like a faceless figure. Can't help but dig that.

Meanwhile, it continues to get cooler, but I'm still doing the cropped top thing. Loves me some decolletage. I've been drawn to these pieces with sleeves and bare shoulders all year; there's something really old world/new world about them since they kind of reference drawstring chemises from the 16th-18th centuries. Now, these don't have scooped risque necklines like, say, a robe de la francaise, but the attention to the decolletage is awesome. The paired slit skirt and the boots carry-through some turn of the century references that were going through my head. Perhaps it's because I've been taking classes on Colonial New York. We'll see where all this goes.

Asos bra, Minkpink x UO top (c/o), Armani Exchange jeans (with a knee rip made by yours truly) (c/o), vintage hat, vintage Doc Martens via Nifty Thrifty
JEWELSDe Lune x By Boe directional choker, Plukka bullet necklace with a signet ring designed by my mom , By Boe earring (c/o)Lulu Frost cut steel cuff (c/o), George Frost Victory cuff (c/o), Vera Meat mystery hugs & chihuahua rings, Jenny Bird sleeping serpent ring (c/o), Beso Beso Leslie ring (c/o), Vanessa Mooney shield ring (c/o), Rose Pierre Marquis ring (c/o Gilt), Datter Industries eye ring

Phew! I got an edgier, shorter haircut, and all of a sudden I feel like piling on the jewelry, popping a hat on my head, and then proceed to stomp around the village in my Docs.

The appeal of excess jewelry is the weight you feel from everything. You feel like you're donning armor around your neck, arms and hands. I was especially keeen on wearing these two cuffs, which were given to me as parting gifts from the incredible team at Lulu Frost. The cut steel piece is crafted from two antique shoe buckles, which just makes my heart melt with obsession.

Anyway, knucklehead tendencies came out with all this tomboy garb. The addition of the strappy bra was a way of adding something shmexy and feminine, it peeks out as the flowy top moves and drapes low under the shoulders.

-P.S.-
Congrats to our De Lune x By Boe II collection winners! You guys will be getting emails shortly. nd an extra special thank-you to everyone who supported and entered, it means the world, you guys :]

Insta

It's soooo much easier to shoot on the fly with my phone, so my Instagrams tend to be a bit more whimsical than what I manage to get up on here. Trying to get it to be the other way around...

NYFW Spring '14 Explained, Tim Blanks Backstage

9.21.2013

So, it's been a few weeks since NYFW swept by, and I think it's appropriate to not just post looks from the shows, but actually get a sense of what the designer wanted us to see (and feel) from their collections. I could ramble and give a bunch of ill-informed opinions as someone who is just an observer, but I LOVE Style.com's quick little segments that they do every season, and I've been watching Tim Balnks' backstage coverage since I was a freshman in high school.

I think a lot of us as consumers tend to forget about collections as statements, we'll look at the shows and marvel at the styling or the makeup or the models who go down, but we'll forget about the CLOTHES. We'll forget about the pleating on a dress or skirt was inspired by early- 40's Japanese technique, or that a designer's personal interest in Man Ray can open up a conversation about what it means to take inspiration from another artistic medium and apply it to something (somewhat) utilitarian. You get the idea.

But anyway, here are a couple shows that rendered me in total confusion until I heard the collections explained straight from the designers. I really encourage those who are interested in Fashion to really open up and think about the thought process behind making a collection is, because anything worth doing should be incredibly precise and thoughtful. If I have learned anything, it's that I am most fascinated by those moments when a designer creates something that seems benign and unseeming, but then it turns out that the smallest gesture signifies something more grand and important. I know, it's just clothes, but is it really?

Babies!! It's here!!

Beyond excited to introduce you guys to my second collaboration collection with By Boe! Annika Inez and I came together earlier this year to brainstorm and exchange inspiration for this collection, and we decided to move forward with this notion of direction (no pun intended). Life can be seen as a journey, and I felt it was important to create something that reminds us of our constantly-unfolding  journeys through life.

Here's what we've come up with, each piece is made with 14k filled gold/sterling silver wire and chain:
The Odyssey pendant, earrings and ring: The helix shape that Annika created is inspired by the
shape of a compass, while the crossing points refer to the notion of crossed paths.
The Odyssey Choker: My personal favorite, this piece can be worn backwards or forwards. The free-swinging needle pendant is inspired by the Foucault pendulum, which is used to demonstrate the rotation of the earth.
Direction Ring: Inspired by the free movement of one's hands, these rings "point" and move with your gestures.
Arrow ring: Like the pendant from our first collection, this ring is made from one continuous piece of wire, which has been shaped into an arrow.
Arrow and Eye Cuffs: An expansion on our first collection of pendants, now you can wear 'em on your wrist!

So now, it's giveaway time!!
In celebration of our launch, I'd LOVE to give 3 of you lucky folks some goodies from our collection. I have the pleasure of bestowing winners with a set of Direction rings and an Eye Cuff.

First, come on down & join By Boe's mailing list. From there, you'll be able to add more entries and chances to win by liking pages, tweetin' and more.

Feel free to tweet/instagram with #DeLunexByBoe2 for extra entries as well! The giveaway ends on 9/24, so you'll have a week to add to your entries as much as you'd like!
Good luck m'loves!

Retrograde

9.13.2013

Vintage pinafore and jacket, vintage Christian Dior blouse, vintage Club Monaco bag, Pour la Victoire shoes (c/o Gilt), randomly acquired sunglasses (could have been Etsy, don't remember)

Apologies on the poor photo quality, I'm without access to a tripod at the moment, so I shot these by shoddily focusing and propping my camera on stairs and stuff. Took it as a nice little challenge.

Anywho, I've been gearing more into fall by layering blouses under dresses and such. Pinafores are an interesting garment; technically I guess you could interpret this as either that or just a jumper dress since a pinafore traditionally has an open back, while this has the open back but with cross-strap detailing, which I looooooove. Pinafore dresses were worn by children and women in the late 19th-century as a protective garment for work and play, so I kinda went school-kid-goes-english-rock for this ensemble (shoes + jacket + sunglasses for "edge" etc).

Woo! Gonna take this look out on the town on this lovely Friday, happy weekend y'all!
