Laughing Casually

4.19.2015

Vintage jumpsuit, sweater, vintage Calvin Klein jacket via DRV (℅), House of Holland Sunglasses (℅), Vans sneakers

'Soops 'cashe in the pajama-esque jumpsuit and roly-poly knit sweater. I realized the other day just how much I tend to use denim as a way to "play down" what I put together; like jeans and denim jackets have this magic ability to immediately dress something down just out of principal.

Add the deconstructed lace-job on the Vans and you gotcher'self an elevated ensemble.

Well, anyway, here's what I throw on to grab Chinese takeout before hitting up the photo developers.

Dig It

vintage..uhh..everything
...except the Ray Bans, them's new

You know the best part of working at a vintage wholesale clothing warehouse is? 50% of this outfit, which was found in bins that I dug through.
The other best parts are pretty much everything else.
Yey!

Uniqlo Heat tech turtleneck, vintage sweater, boots and bag, vintage-thrifted jacket, Asos jeans

Chillin' in the oversized wool blend jacket with horn buttons. Waaaay more color than usual but screw it- it's cold out and of course the one pair of jeans I brought with me have holes in the knees...

Vintage everything

Tales from the attic: a wicker ribbon box bag from the 50's; the previous owner seems to have replaced the missing handles with a big 'ol gaudy chain necklace. Lord knows I'll be putting this thing into heavy rotation once the weather gets warmer and coat sleeves won't be obscuring any part of the bag.

And then there are my slightly dorky and awkward cropped flare overalls via Dusty Rose, with a dark wash and contrast orange stitching. Good with T-shirts, but I went with a matching cotton knit set with quirky threading, obtained from Horizons Vintage.

The good thing about being your own blog photog is that you can just take shit whenever you want- like, 45 minutes after you've woken up on a Sunday.

and yes, those are sunglasses in the plant.

Took some Marc Bolan vibes out for a stroll the other afternoon. I found this paisley ascot at work and I've been trying it out with things here & there. Now all I need is a stickpin and it'll be REALLY kickass.

(a li'l tower!)
Vintage sweater, vintage jacket via Dusty Rose Vintage, American Apparel skirt, Rebecca Minkoff backpack (℅) , Timo Weiland x Tsubo shoes

Back when I was at Parsons, I took a class on 18th century French art, and damned be I if that wasn't the most luxurious experience I could have for an hour and a half in the morning after a baked good and a strong cup of tea. And God bless the French, they've given us all the sinful things in life (ask Benjamin Franklin, because that is totally possible), including almost all the shit that can make us feel both guilt and exquisite self-induced euphoria (y'know, jacquard, cannelés, champagne, oxygen, etc). I only bring this up because these shoes remind me of Ottoman-inspired slippers that ladies used to wear back in Versailles and such; The French aristocracy really "dug" the whole Ottoman thing. I forget exactly how that moved on to the whole "farm life" schpiel aside from Marie Antoinette just being a teenager and Austrian, but I'll probably end up doing a rant about that on Twitter at some point.

Anyway, they're good shoes, good job, Weiland & Tsubo folk.

Losta colors too! My hair is brighter than ever and I keep wearing a bunch of colors, which I told myself I wouldn't do, but oh well, cannot be tamed, I suppose. Claire Geist here, hear me roar.

Graduated bob haircuts: good if you're gonna go for that early-Bowie look. Extra points if you actually have a sharp coat.

Jumpsuit via Urban Renewal, vintage jacket & loafers, these socks purchased from the Sock Man in St.Mark's

I shoot all my posts myself, which is how I like it, but sometimes it just dawns on me how silly it all is when I stand on my roof or on the street by myself in front of a person-less camera. I LOVE shooting on my roof because it's a pretty neutral backdrop, but also because I don't really have to deal with people- and with this ensemble, I was getting questions all day, mostly about where I got my socks and shoes.

The shoes were a hell of a find though; someone just made these with the help of some spray paint and carved-out foam platforms. Whenever I wear them, I wonder who had them last, but I guess that's pretty normal of anything I own that is vintage.

Portrait Project with MZ Wallace

10.03.2014

http://www.mzwallace.com/inside-mzw/portrait-project/156/claire

Had the most excellent opportunity to take MZ Wallace on a tour of the Dusty Rose Warehouse and chat about the importance of vintage in my life and the ever-evolving influence the interwebs has on all of us.

Special thanks to my boss Maresa for letting me take everyone around the warehouse and knock my stuff over (I'm still training, guys, bear with me)

Ps, if y'all ever wanna come by, we're located at 251 Greenpoint ave and we're open to the public Fri-Sat 12-8 and Sundays 12-6. Yay! Come say hi sometime.
