Reformation jumper and Calypso cardigan via Bib + Tuck, Rebecca Minkoff, bag, De Lune x By Boe Odyssey choker (x), Cheap Monday sandals (x), George Frost cuff (x)

Sometimes I feel more compelled to wear a piece of jewelry when it can fill the spaces that a garment leaves open. I was particularly drawn to this jumper on Bib and Tuck 1)Because it's getting warmer and I needed a piece with built-in air conditioning (aka, the slits on the legs here) and 2)Because it has this lovely keyhole detail in the back, which one can expect to see on a garment by Reformation because they have a penchant for the sexy details.

When I was working with designer Annika Inez on our second collaboration collection, I mentioned I was particularly keen on having a piece that could be worn backwards and forwards, which is why the odyssey choker is probably my favorite piece in the collection; I can just let the pendant dangle down the back while the front appears as just the minimal gold bar. My George Frost "Victory" cuff is also usually worn at the top of my forearm because there's something about arm cuffs that feels very akin to armor when worn around the arm and not the wrist, it's kinda empowering.

AG jeans, vintage shirt, La Canadienne flats, Rebecca Minkoff backpack

Found this H Bar C "ranchwear" shirt in a thrift store back in Buffalo, and was magically able to figure out that it's from the 60's thanks to this handy dandy vintage label resource. The minute I saw it, I knew I wanted to play up the fact that it has this "breastplate", which I'm assuming came out of the tradition of military uniforms and then became a regular part of what one would wear on the ranch whilst horseback riding/wrangling. I was curious to see if I could totally take it out of the context of rockabilly/ranchwear and just wear it for what it is on me: an oversized black button-down with a high-low thing going on. I'll probably make it even more minimal with less color later on, but for now, it's something comfy to throw on and experiment with.

Asos turtleneck, Vintage jumpsuit and bag, Renvy shoes via Gilt (x), Jenny Bird midi rings (x)

At this point, everyone and their uncle has done some version of a "80's/90's-throwback-woohoo-remember-when-Desitiny's-Child-did-this" denim overalls thing, but I wanted to play around with my own denim jumpsuit by posing the question "What  if this were a Back to the Future situation and Marty McFly wanted to blend into the past but with that contemporary flavor of his?" Yes, different decades, but you get the idea

I love this one jumpsuit (which is a UO Urban Renewal number), and what drew me to it was its minimal elegance. The little details are what always get me; in this case it ranges from the front buttons, to the dark wash, to the thin straps which cross at the back. All I needed to TLC/Fresh Prince of Bel-Air this thing up with was a free falling unbuttoned half at my side and a little layering, et voila!

The 60's accessories kept everything a l'il elegant, I think. Speaking of, how nifty is Jenny Bird's newest set of midi rings? I love her new collection of jewelry with serpentine motifs, each piece plays with proportion by wrapping around your hands and wrists ever so coyly.

Now I need an ice cream and some wine before Graduation ceremonies this week....

Jonathan Simkhai tee, Cheap Monday dress-turned vest (x), Dessu pleated shorts via Figure and Form (x), Ecote shoes, De Lune x By Boe odyssey choker (x), randomly acquired chain ring, Verameat necklace (x)

A little experiment in draping and layerin'.
My favorite part of the choker I co-designed with By Boe is that it can be worn backwards, so I'm always trying to find pieces to wear it with. I noticed the hang tab on the back of this dress and thought it'd be a lovely place to hold the pendant in place, and so on went the gold jewelry.

The minuscule straps against white almost makes the dress-turned-vest disappear, leaving the rest of the fabric to just drop and splay out like petals around the bandage arms of this tee. When the dress is all buttoned up and worn "correctly", it's a little loose, kind of like the whole thing is the top portion of a pair of trucker overalls: a l'il baggy, but doable. Nothing quite like simply allowing your clothes to fall this or that way without the internal prang of worry of judgement ("Does this fit me right? Are they staring at this unironed fold on my side??"). Yeah, this was a sort of experiment for me, but I like having a new freedom of sorts.

Noul blouse (x), Vintage Levi's shorts, La Canadienne flats (x), Vintage Coach bag, Vintage scarf, Persol sunglasses, Verameat necklaces (x)

Too much magenta. Whatever.

Man, was I in a sartorial rut last week, I couldn't be bothered to wear anything else except basics, which is all well and good for the sake of comfort, but I just wasn't feeling suited to flair.

Every once in a while, when I start feeling like that, I'll finally get fed up and watch a certain cache of films I have stashed on my computer for the purposes of sparking my imagination. In this folder I have A Hard Day's Night, Cabaret, The Triplets of Belleville, Harold and Maude and of course, Annie Hall.

Yes, Woody Allen has had his numerous scandals, but there is always something relatable and beautiful to find in his films, and Annie Hall has proven to remain particularly important for me. Annie is such an admirable character (played by her real-life persona, Diane Keaton), and it isn't just her singular, quirky sense of style, it's her sunny temperament and confidence in the face of her occassional bumbling mishaps that adds charm to every movement she makes on screen

I watched Annie Hall this morning before heading out, marking every costume change. I've looked to her before for inspirado numerous times before, but I hadn't tried that oh-so-70's scarf-around-the-waist thing before, or at least not for a while. I had this wonderful menswear inspired blouse and the high waisted shorts, but the lack of color bothered me. And on went the scarf.
Proved to be pretty nifty, eh?

Spankin' New Space

5.08.2014

I don't have internet in my apartment (currently reporting from the Atlas CafĂ© on the corner off Havemeyer and Grand) and I need to take a few minutes to write about something that isn't about Franz Kafka or Louise Bourgeois or the Rag Houses in New Jersey; although I love them all and I'm really, REALLY looking forward to never having to write another academic paper ever again.
Unless I go for Graduate...
Yikes.

Anyway, welcome to my room.
It's half-finished, as my whole apartment currently is. I moved in last week from a converted living room-turned-bedroom in Manhattan and I'm ecstatic to be done with the previous space. My current room mates have yet to move in, but I'm sure in time they'll be making an appearance on here as we share our adventures for the next year. Oh sure, living behind a fake wall made of carpeting and wooden planks was fun while it lasted, but if I weren't so lazy I would have moved out much sooner.
So yes, Brooklyn's pretty nifty for a Queens girl.

All of my knick-knacks made it safely over here, and it feels like the brick wall in my room suits my usual color scheme which is, uh, I guess reds, whites and neutrals with a fine veneer of junk store dust. I need book shelves, hell, I need shelves and a pole in my closet so I can hang my damn clothes, but that's to come with time. 'Till then, I'm trying to get this graduation thing done.

New Place, New(ish) Stuff

5.06.2014

Tucked Asos jumpsuit via The Bib + Tuck ClosetJonathan Simkhai tee, American Apparel jacket fitted with vintage buttons, various vintage necklaces and Keds
Okay, I'm without proper internet and I'm still in the moving-in process, but I'm alive and slowly posting. bear with me, I still have to unpack all of my crap properly.

I had a conversation with someone at Beacon’s Closet the other day about fabrics. “The thing is,” she said, “there are certain people who stay as far away from synthetic fabrics as they possibly can, and there are others who embrace them as not a product of the industry or just something ‘cheap’, but rather, as something kitschy” this totally rang true to me, as someone who either wears something synthetic and doesn’t even think about it, or completely deviates from it so that I can be more comfortable and/or more “real”...whatever that means.
The fact of the matter is, if you’re going to buy something made from a synthetic fabric, it’s better to second-hand it and totally avoid adding to the already unsurmountable waste out there. According to SMART, the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles organiziation, each U.S. consumer throws out at least 70lbs of textiles per all, almost all of which can be recycled, and 5% of landfill waste is textiles. So not only is it less expensive is more fun to buy second-hand, it's waaaaaaaay better for the environment and your local economy.

I totally gravitated towards this part-cotton, part-something else jumpsuit for the color and the print; totally dig it, and a jumpsuit always makes my life easier. But the whole notion of kitsch really stuck with me. And so, when I noticed that upturned pant legs revealed only one side was printed, I decided to pretend I was 8 again, and reached for my Keds rather than a strappy sandal. For me, this notion just echoes the comfort of the piece itself. Next was the tee, which is my go-to, as it adds a bit of asymmetry and a little something interesting to whatever I layer it under. And then the buttons, which I have acquired and continue to collect from a junk store not too far from my new apartment in Brooklyn.
